Ballard’s fuel cell technology offers an efficient, innovative approach for lowering the costs of energy use and reducing greenhouse gas emissions in many residential markets around the world.
Japan, with 47 million households, some of the world’s highest energy costs and strong environmental commitments is just such a market.
Through Ebara Ballard, our joint venture in Japan, we are partnering with major energy industry leaders such as Tokyo Gas and Nippon Oil to commercialize fuel cell cogeneration systems for home use.
The Ebara Ballard solution is a 1kW product installed on-site at consumers’ homes that generates both electricity and hot water while reducing the homeowner’s dependency on the electrical grid. The heart of this solution is the Mark1030™ fuel cell product, which was developed to operate on hydrogen reformed from commonly available fuels including natural gas and kerosene. The Mark1030™ has successfully powered hundreds of residential cogeneration systems in every corner and climate throughout Japan and is saving homeowners hundreds of dollars in annual energy costs while reducing CO2 emissions by up to 40% compared to traditional power generation.
