Distributed Generation

“Reducing our demand for electricity from the utility will create an estimated savings of one hundred thousand dollars each summer, while at the same time reducing our environmental footprint.”

Doug Beebe, Admin. Services Coporate Manager, Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A., Inc.

Ballard’s ClearGen™ fuel cell system is a complete solution, designed to generate clean energy right at the point of demand. Modular 500kW PowerBanks are combined to produce multiple megawatts of zero-emission electricity, with heat created by the system providing hot water and space heating. The system can operate continuously to meet baseload power needs, or intermittently to provide peak power during times of high demand.

At Toyota Motor Sales, a 1.1MW ClearGen™ fuel cell system supplies electricity to the headquarters campus during times of peak energy demand, while producing zero emissions. Hydrogen fuel is delivered directly to the system by means of an existing pipeline, which also supplies a local fuel cell vehicle fueling station.

Distributed Generation Market

For electric utilities, such as FirstEnergy Corporation in Ohio,  the scalable, highly responsive units are an efficient means of meeting peak load demands, avoiding the cost of permanent grid and transmission infrastructure development.

ClearGen™ can also be an effective end-of-grid solution for remote communities, which currently rely on noisy, dirty diesel generators for power.

Frost & Sullivan has recognized Ballard's ClearGen™ system with the "2011 New Product Innovation Award" in the North American Stationary Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell category.
