Next Stop – Hydrogen Power: Ballard to showcase heavy-duty fuel cell modules for public transport at UITP 2023

The fuel cell supplier has reached industry-leading 150 million kilometer operational milestone, powering over 3,600 buses and trucks on global roads.

Ballard Power Systems (NASDAQ: BLDP; TSX: BLDP) will showcase its latest generation FCmoveTM hydrogen fuel cell modules for zero-emission public transport at the UITP Global Transport Summit in Barcelona, from 4-7 June 2023. Ballard is exhibiting in hall 6, stand B152.

Designed to address the specific power and performance requirements of public and heavy-duty transport, Ballard’s FCmoveTM range is the longest serving fuel cell solution available. Hydrogen fuel cell powered buses have been operating in revenue service since the mid-2000s and Ballard-powered buses and trucks have now operated over 150 million km globally.

“Fuel cell electric buses are fast gaining momentum as a zero-emission solution in fleets where longer range, short fuelling time and high power requirements are a priority,” said Nicolas Pocard, Vice President of Marketing & Strategic Partnerships, Ballard Power Systems. “We’re encouraged by the growth in volume deployments and demand for hydrogen-power for public fleets – both buses and trains – proving that the next stop for zero-emission public transport is hydrogen power.”

Powering the fast-growing number of zero-emission bus fleets in Europe, North America and China, Ballard’s proven FCmove product range incorporates fuel cell modules with a power range from 45kW – 120 kW. Designed for the specific requirements of transit buses, Ballard’s 70kW FCmove™-HD and 100kW FCmove-HD+ are available in rooftop and engine bay configurations for the maximum level of integration flexibility.

On display at Ballard’s stand at UITP 2023 are:

  • FCmove-HD - a proven 70kW solution that offers a durable and compact solution for system integrators and vehicle OEMs, backed by Ballard’s unmatched fuel cell expertise and experience. The module offers lower life-cycle costs with better fuel economy and fewer maintenance requirements.
  • FCmove-HD+ is a robust and powerful 100kW next-generation alternative, with low lifecycle cost, simplified integration and system flexibility. The module is 40% more compact, over 30% lighter and with half the component parts of previous generations. This results in an anticipated 40% improvement in total lifecycle cost while delivering leading operating performance, high efficiency and wide operational range.
  • FCgen®-LCS stack - uses Ballard proprietary heavy-duty membrane electrode assembly (MEA) and low-cost durable carbon plates to deliver performance and lower total cost of ownership. It provides stable electrical power for FCmove™ products over a wide range of operating and environmental conditions.

“The FCmove™ fuel cell range is designed for applications where reliability, durability and uncompromised performance are the key factors for a public transport operator’s total cost of ownership,” concludes Nicolas Pocard. “Our learnings from real-word experience enables us to deliver technology to meet zero-emission targets without disrupting existing operations, including range and performance, and our customer care team provides support to ensure successful implementation and operation during product lifetime.”
